Powerline review: How to get WiFi via power cable

In today’s world, stable and comprehensive Wi-Fi is essential within your own four walls. But what can you do if the signal doesn’t reach remote areas such as the basement?

This is where powerline adapters come into play, which distribute the Internet via the existing power grid. In this test report, I share my personal experiences with the FRITZ!Powerline Set from AVM and show you how you can use this solution to expand your Wi-Fi network.

Why Powerline?

Before we go into detail, the question arises: Why powerline at all? In many households, there are areas where the Wi-Fi signal is weak or non-existent. Thick walls, ceilings or simply the distance to the router can be reasons for this.

One option would be to install additional WLAN repeaters. However, these often have to be positioned awkwardly and do not always offer the desired performance.

Powerline adapters, on the other hand, use the existing power grid to transmit the internet signal. This means that every socket can potentially become a network connection – an elegant and often uncomplicated solution.

Personal experience: Burglary in cellar

A few months ago, I had a break-in in my cellar. Fortunately, nothing of value was taken, but the feeling of insecurity remained.

To prevent future incidents, I decided to install an eufy surveillance camera in the basement. However, it soon became apparent that my router’s Wi-Fi signal didn’t reach the basement.

A direct cable connection was also not an option due to the structural conditions. So I looked for alternatives and came across the FRITZ! powerline set.

Technical details: FRITZ!Powerline Set

The FRITZ!Powerline 1260E WLAN Set consists of two adapters:

  • Powerline data rate: Up to 1,200 Mbps thanks to the latest 2×2 MIMO technology, which enables more robust connections, greater ranges and higher data throughputs.
  • WLAN standards: Supports WLAN AC (5 GHz) with up to 866 MBit/s and WLAN N (2.4 GHz) with up to 400 MBit/s.
  • Connections: Each adapter has a Gigabit LAN connection for wired devices such as PCs, smart TVs or surveillance cameras.
  • Compatibility: Works with all common routers and can be used both as a WLAN access point and as a LAN bridge.
  • Security: Supports WPA2 encryption for secure WLAN connections.

Installation and setup

Installing the FRITZ! powerline set is very simple:

  1. Plug the first adapter into the socket: The first adapter is plugged into a socket near the router and connected to the router via LAN cable.
  2. Connect the second adapter in the target area: The second adapter goes into the room that is to be supplied with Internet – in my case, the basement.
  3. Automatic pairing: After a few seconds, the adapters automatically connect to each other and the network is ready for use.
  4. Configure Wi-Fi: Optionally, the Wi-Fi can be customized via the FRITZ!App or the user interface.

Performance and speed test

In my test, I noticed a significant improvement in the Internet connection in the basement. While I didn’t have a stable Wi-Fi signal before, I was able to use my eufy surveillance camera without any problems after installing the FRITZ!

Video streaming and surfing the Internet also worked without any noticeable delays.

Advantages

  • Simple installation and ready for immediate use
  • High transfer rates up to 1,200 MBit/s
  • Stable connection even over long distances
  • Works via the existing power grid without additional cables

Disadvantages

  • Depending on the quality of the power lines in the house
  • Higher power consumption than classic WLAN repeaters
  • Slightly more expensive than simple repeater solutions

The FRITZ! Powerline 1260E WLAN Set has helped me to establish a reliable Internet connection in my basement.

Powerline is a sensible alternative, especially in situations where conventional Wi-Fi repeaters reach their limits. This solution is particularly ideal for using surveillance cameras or smart home devices in remote areas.
